Dubai, UAE – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, arrived in Dubai on Tuesday to participate in the World Climate Change Conference (COP28), which is being held in the United Arab Emirates from November 27 to December 8.
The conference, which is attended by world leaders, experts, and activists, aims to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and to enhance the global response to the threat of climate change.
President Mohamud will present at the conference the serious impact of climate change on the lives of the Somali people, who have been suffering from severe flooding caused by El Niño in many parts of the country, which have displaced millions, destroyed livelihoods, and increased food insecurity and malnutrition.
The president will also highlight the importance of getting international support and the plans of the Somali government to address the climate crisis, which include strengthening resilience, promoting renewable energy, and restoring degraded land.
President Mohamud will also hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders and partners to seek urgent assistance for the Somali people affected by the flooding in the regions, and to mobilize resources for the recovery and reconstruction efforts.
