New York (SONNA) – A delegation from Somalia’s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare participated in the United Nations General Assembly to address the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
Led by Deputy Minister Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Bulaale and Director General Dr. Guled Abdijalil Sheikh Ali, the delegation joined global leaders to discuss the health risks posed by resistance to disinfectants. The session, opened by General Assembly President Mr. Philemon Yang, saw the approval of a policy aimed at combating antibiotic resistance.
Key speakers included United Nations Under-Secretary Mr. Amina, WHO Secretary General Dr. Tedros Adhanom, World Environment Organization Secretary Ms. Inger Andersen, Animal Health Organization Secretary Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, and World Food Organization Secretary.
Mr. Amina emphasized the need for global action to tackle antibiotic resistance, while Dr. Tedros Adhanom highlighted the importance of a unified effort to protect future generations.
Dr. Guled Abdijalil detailed Somalia’s initiatives to combat antibiotic resistance, and Deputy Minister Dr. Mohamed Hassan Mohamed Bulaale called for international support to bolster Somalia’s efforts.
The assembly concluded with a commitment to implement the discussed policy against antibiotic resistance.
