Tokyo, Japan – Mr. Mohamud Macalin Abdulle, Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Authority (SODMA), recently led a delegation to Japan for crucial discussions with senior officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The purpose of this meeting was to strengthen cooperation and explore avenues for joint projects in Somalia.
During the meeting, Director Momita Yasuki, representing JICA’s Africa division, provided an overview of ongoing and planned projects in African countries, with a particular focus on Somalia. These projects span various sectors, including disaster management, infrastructure development, and capacity building.
Commissioner Mohamud Macalin expressed Somalia’s urgent need for well-equipped emergency centers across the regions. These centers would serve as critical hubs for disaster response, coordination, and relief efforts. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between SODMA and JICA to establish these centers efficiently.
Recognizing the significance of skilled personnel in disaster management, Commissioner Abdulle requested JICA’s support in enhancing the knowledge and skills of SODMA staff. Training programs, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives were discussed as potential avenues for capacity development.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between Japan and Somalia. The meeting served as a platform to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore innovative solutions for disaster resilience.
