Mogadishu, Somalia – The Commissioner of the Disaster Management Agency (SODMA), Mr. Mohamud Ma’allin Abdulle, and the Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General in Somalia, Mr. George Conway, co-chaired discussions on the pressing humanitarian situation in Somalia.
The conference, which included key organizations such as OCHA, UNDP, and FAO, focused on preparing for the anticipated drought that threatens East Africa and Somalia. A significant point of discussion was the puzzling cause of the current floods along the Shabelle River, despite the absence of heavy rains in Somalia and the Ethiopian highlands.
Participants also reviewed the damage assessment report from last year’s Dayr floods, emphasizing the need to prevent aid diversion and improve information sharing on humanitarian issues. Additionally, the meeting highlighted the urgency of accelerating the Sabun Dam project in Jowhar’s outskirts, particularly the Disaster Management Agency’s role in the initiative.
