Mogadishu Port Boosts Operational Capacity Following Top African Ranking

MOGADISHU – The Mogadishu Port, a vital lifeline for Somalia’s economy, has taken a significant step in its modernization efforts with the unveiling of new, advanced operational equipment. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameriko), the Director General of the Mogadishu Port Authority, officially presented a fleet of new  forklifts, vehicles specifically designed to streamline cargo handling and enhance the overall efficiency of the capital’s busiest seaport.

This strategic investment comes on the heels of a remarkable achievement in a recent global evaluation. According to the 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) published by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Mogadishu Port was named the most efficient port in East Africa, a powerful signal of its rapid progress and competitive edge. The comprehensive index, which evaluates ports worldwide, also recognized Mogadishu among the top five most developed ports on the entire African continent, a position that highlights its growing capability and strategic importance.

The new equipment, which includes modern cranes and reach stackers, is part of a broader expansion that has nearly doubled the port’s cargo-handling capacity. Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur recently inaugurated a new container terminal, raising the port’s annual throughput from 150,000 to 250,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), further positioning Mogadishu as a regional trade hub.

In a statement to the media, Ambassador Nur affirmed his administration’s renewed commitment to advancing the port’s capabilities. He stressed that the new vehicles are part of a vision to infuse new vitality into the port’s development and improvement plan, building on a foundation of discipline, professionalism, and partnership. His leadership, which began in late 2025, has been focused on improving efficiency, strengthening revenue collection, and ensuring the port contributes directly to national economic growth.

The modernization of the Mogadishu Port is a clear reflection of Somalia’s ambitious recovery and development agenda. By investing in critical infrastructure and earning a place among the continent’s top-performing ports, the nation is not only strengthening its economic resilience but also reasserting its role as a key player in regional and international trade. The port’s progress offers a beacon of hope, demonstrating that a commitment to innovation and reform can yield extraordinary results.
