The Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction, and Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia has joined forces with UN-Habitat to promote sustainable urbanization. This cooperation agreement aims to revitalize cities and towns across the country, creating resilient and inclusive spaces for its people.
The Minister of Public Works, Mr. Abdisalam Abdi Ali (Dhaay), and Mr. Oumar Sylla, head of UN-Habitat in Africa, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). While this MoU serves as a prelude to an official agreement, it already sets the stage for impactful collaboration.
The heart of this partnership lies in sustainable urbanization. It encompasses infrastructure development, housing solutions, and improved municipal services. The Ministry and UN-Habitat will work together to enhance infrastructure, address the housing deficit, and ensure efficient municipal services.
UN-Habitat, a specialized agency of the United Nations, brings extensive experience in urban development. Their expertise will complement Somalia’s efforts, especially given their successful track record in other regions.
The MoU builds upon recommendations from the Cairo Conference held in August 2021. During this conference, UN-Habitat discussed strategies for urban development and housing investment. The partnership will follow a roadmap to ensure effective implementation.
The agreement emphasizes collaboration with local communities and authorities. Their input is crucial for shaping sustainable urbanization policies that reflect the needs and aspirations of the people.
This partnership represents hope, a shared commitment to rebuilding and revitalizing its cities. Together, the Ministry of Public Works and UN-Habitat aim to create vibrant, livable spaces that empower citizens and contribute to the nation’s progress.
