The Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services of Somalia has announced the appointment of Dr. Hussein Abukar Muhiadin as the National Incident Manager for the El Nino health response. Dr. Muhiadin is the Executive Director of the National Institute of Health, a research institution under the ministry.
The appointment was made by the state minister who is the Acting Minister of Health and Human Services. They issued a letter to all government organizations, local organizations, United Nations organizations, and other stakeholders involved in the health sector, instructing them to work directly with Dr. Muhiadin as directed by the minister.
The letter stated that the Federal Ministry of Health is fully committed to enhancing the health system and exerting every effort to provide healthcare services and rescue the Somali people affected by the El Nino disaster. The El Nino phenomenon has caused severe floods and outbreaks of diseases in Somalia and other parts of East Africa.
The letter also mandated Dr. Mohiuddin to establish genuine cooperation with government agencies involved in emergency response and disaster management, particularly the National Disaster Management Agency (SODMA Somalia). SODMA Somalia is the lead agency for coordinating and implementing the national disaster management policy and strategy.
Dr. Muhiadin expressed his gratitude for the trust and confidence bestowed upon him by the ministry and vowed to do his best to fulfill his duties. He said he will work closely with all partners and stakeholders to ensure a timely and effective response to the health challenges posed by the El Nino crisis. He also called for more support and resources from the international community to help Somalia cope with the situation.
