Ankara, Turkey, became the focal point for global marine safety as it hosted an international conference dedicated to the prevention of ocean pollution and sustainable resource utilization. The event was a collaborative effort organized by the United Nations peace community representatives from Costa Rica and Turkey, alongside Dr. Mohamed Osman from the United Nations Peace University.
The conference brought together experts and delegates from various nations, including Japan, France, and the United Arab Emirates, to deliberate on strategies for protecting the marine environment. A significant emphasis was placed on curbing sea water pollution and exploring avenues for harnessing maritime resources to fuel economic growth.
In line with the conference’s theme, Somalia has recently made strides in maritime education with the establishment of a new university in Mogadishu. This institution is set to leverage Somalia’s extensive coastal resources, which are among the richest in the region, to develop future leaders in marine science and policy.
The gathering in Ankara represents a concerted effort by the international community to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans today.
