International Concerns Rise Over Tigray Conflict in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The international diplomatic community in Ethiopia has raised alarms over the escalating conflict in the Tigray region, particularly following recent violent clashes in the Raya Alamata district, located in the southern part of Tigray. The resurgence of conflict has sparked widespread concern among various ambassadors stationed in Addis Ababa, who are witnessing the spread of unrest across different Ethiopian territories.

In a significant move, the embassies of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States have collectively underscored the critical responsibility of governments to safeguard their citizens and maintain national peace. A joint statement released by these nations has urged for immediate de-escalation of tensions and the protection of civilians caught in the conflict zones.

The ambassadors have unanimously agreed that fostering an inclusive dialogue that encompasses all pertinent stakeholders is imperative to halt the proliferation of conflict within Ethiopia’s regions. This call to action comes as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports the displacement of approximately 29,000 individuals from Raya Alamata, who have sought refuge in Kobo town in North Wollo and Sekota town in Wag Hamra within the Amhara region. The UN has cautioned that the displacement figures could rise if the conflict continues to advance towards frontline areas.

Critics have pointed to the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a contributing factor to the nation’s instability, citing policies marked by coercion and threats. The resulting uncertainty has compelled an increasing number of Ethiopians to flee their homes in search of peace.

Regional experts are sounding the alarm on the potential repercussions of the Ethiopian conflict, warning that it poses a significant threat to the stability and peace of the Horn of Africa. The ongoing insecurity has also hampered humanitarian efforts, making it challenging for charity organizations to deliver essential aid, such as food and water, to those affected by the turmoil.

As the situation unfolds, the international community remains vigilant, advocating for a peaceful resolution that can restore stability to Ethiopia and the broader region.
