How Has the Somali Government’s Fight Against Corruption Affected Its Sources of Income?

In April 2023, the Somali government launched an anti-corruption campaign to combat the loss of government revenue from its limited sources of income. One of these sources is the Mogadishu airport, which provides various important services.

The government’s efforts to eliminate corruption and theft of revenue have yielded positive results. By ensuring that officials responsible for managing these sources of income act in accordance with the law, the government has been able to significantly increase its revenue. This has enabled the government to provide public services and address budgetary challenges.

One area where this change has been particularly evident is in the extension of visa and work permit services, as shown by brief information obtained by SONNA. Revenue from these services has increased significantly in recent months, as demonstrated in the table below.

Month Visa Extension Work Permit
January 2023 $423,950.00 $36,500
February 2023 $375,530.00 $71,160
March 2023 $268,840 $78,770
April 2023 $231,460 $219,290
May 2023 $361,470 $386,060
June 2023 $480,550 $340,730

These figures demonstrate the potential for further improvements if officials continue to act in accordance with the law. The Somali government’s corruption crackdown serves as an example for other countries facing similar challenges.

In conclusion, the Somali government’s corruption crackdown has had a positive impact on its revenue from sources such as visa and work Permit services. By continuing to fight corruption and promote transparency, the government can further increase its revenue and improve its ability to provide essential services to its citizens.
