UK Opens Applications for Fully Funded Chevening Scholarships for Somali Professionals

Mogadishu (SONNA) – The United Kingdom Government has opened applications for the 2027/28 Chevening Scholarships, offering fully funded master’s degree opportunities at leading UK universities for talented Somali professionals with leadership potential.

The prestigious scholarship programme aims to equip emerging leaders with advanced knowledge, professional skills, and global networks to contribute to Somalia’s development while addressing shared international challenges. Since the programme was introduced in Somalia, more than 100 Somalis have been awarded Chevening Scholarships, joining a global alumni network of over 60,000 professionals.

The programme is supported in Somalia by the Hormuud Salaam Foundation, which is funding two Somali Chevening Scholars annually between the 2025/26 and 2027/28 academic years, reflecting a joint commitment to expanding access to world-class higher education and investing in Somali talent.

British Ambassador to Somalia Charles King said Somalia’s greatest asset is its people, adding that Chevening enables talented Somalis to access world-class education, strengthen their professional networks, and return home with the skills needed to help shape the country’s future. He encouraged qualified candidates from across Somalia to apply and become part of the global Chevening community.

Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), said the programme is seeking exceptional individuals committed to working with the UK to build a more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable future. She added that Chevening values diversity and leadership, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups.

Established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarships programme has supported more than 60,000 professionals worldwide, underscoring the United Kingdom’s long-standing commitment to developing future global leaders.
