Somali Embassy in Egypt Marks 66th Independence Anniversary with Diaspora Community

Cairo, July 1, 2026 (SONNA) – The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Egypt, in collaboration with the Somali Students’ Association and the Somali community, hosted a well-attended ceremony to commemorate the 66th anniversary of Somalia’s Independence and Unity Days, marking the historic occasions of June 26 and July 1, 1960.

The event brought together hundreds of members of the Somali community in Egypt, including academics, students, military officers pursuing studies, community leaders, members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, diplomats, and the Ambassador of Djibouti to Egypt, H.E. Ahmed Ali Barre.

Speakers at the ceremony highlighted the significance of Somalia’s Independence Days and emphasized the importance of preserving national unity, sovereignty, and statehood.

Addressing the gathering, Djibouti’s Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Ahmed Ali Barre, described Somalia as a nation rich in potential and called on Somalis to remain united and uphold the values of patriotism.

Somalia’s Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Ali Abdi Aware, congratulated all Somalis on the occasion, particularly members of the Somali community in Egypt. He urged them to safeguard Somalia’s unity, uphold the country’s reputation, and respect the laws of their host nation.

Ambassador Aware also expressed appreciation to the Arab Republic of Egypt for its longstanding support to Somalia, particularly through the provision of educational scholarships to Somali students, describing the assistance as a lasting contribution to the country’s development.

He reaffirmed the embassy’s commitment to serving Somali citizens in Egypt, noting that its doors remain open to all members of the Somali community.

The Ambassador further welcomed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s participation in the July 1 Independence celebrations in Mogadishu, describing it as a reflection of a peaceful Somalia advancing toward unity, stability, and prosperity.
