Addis Ababa (SONNA) Coronavirus cases kept increasing in the African continent with tens of thousands of infections and over 1,700 deaths, according to the latest data by the John Hopkins University and Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
As of 2 May, Africa CDC recorded 42,769 confirmed COVID-19 cases across the continent and 1,759 deaths, while 14,129 patients have recovered from the disease.
Infections vary among the African countries with South Africa on top with 6,336 cases, but Algeria tops the continent with 453 fatalities, said Africa CDC, adding that the whole of Africa has rising cases, with Lesotho remaining COVID-19 free as of May 1.
Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus voiced his concern over the rise in coronavirus cases in the African countries that already suffered from pandemics like malaria and Ebola.
