Nairobi, Kenya (SONNA) – The Commissioner of the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), Mohamud Ma’alin Abdulle, met with the Swedish Ambassador to Somalia, Joachim Waern, in Nairobi today. The meeting was also attended by Cecilia Kleimert, Head of Somalia’s Resilience Program.
The discussions centered around the pressing humanitarian situation in Somalia, with a particular focus on strategies to mitigate the impact of the anticipated drought. Both parties emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation between donors and SoDMA to improve disaster preparedness and prevention measures.
Commissioner Abdulle expressed his gratitude to the Swedish government for its support, highlighting the pivotal role of the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), funded by Sweden, in coordinating emergency aid efforts. He acknowledged the NEOC as a cornerstone in Somalia’s disaster response infrastructure.
Ambassador Waern reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s resilience against natural disasters, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two nations. The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to strengthen collaborative efforts to safeguard the Somali population from the adverse effects of climate-related challenges.
