MOGADISHU, SONNA – Somalia’s Ministry of Defense has expressed its gratitude for the European Union’s decision to provide military assistance to the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF). The Council’s recent resolution outlines the delivery of military equipment, specifically designed for lethal force, valued at approximately €1 million under the European Peace Facility.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Defense, it stated, “This support to the Somali National Armed Forces will be incremental in further training and equipping our Forces currently trained in General Dhagabadan Academy.
The Ministry of Defense appreciates the European Union’s support to the SNA to assume full responsibility over security operations in Somalia and acknowledges the importance of the European Peace Facility packages of support over the years to enhance the Somali National Army Forces’ capabilities.”
This investment will align with the Somali government’s plan to take over the full security of the country from ATMIS, with the last ATMIS soldier scheduled to depart in December 2024.
