Mogadishu(SONNA)-On the 15 and 16 March 2020, The Federal Government of Somalia, in coordination with the United States Africa Command and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), conducted five (5) airstrikes near the city of Janale.

These strikes were conducted in order to assist AMISOM and the Somali National Army (SNA) during a joint mission to liberate the city of Janaale from the al-Qaeda linked terrorist group Al-Shabaab. The strikes left several al-Shabaab members killed and significantly reduced the group’s ability to conduct operations against SNA and AMISOM forces in Janale effectively.

The coordination between the Somali and AMISOM during the successful mission in Janaale highlights the effectiveness and commitment of the international coalition that has joined to defeat the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. The Federal Government and the citizens it represents are grateful for the support given by AMISOM peacekeepers from the Ugandan Peoples Defense Force in liberating Janaale for the people of Somalia.

The Federal Government of Somalia is also grateful for the bravery and dedication of the men and women of the Somali National Army who served with distinction on this operation against the Al-Qaeda puppet known as al-Shabaab. At this time, it is assessed that no civilians were killed or wounded during the strikes.
