Somaliland’s Defense Minister Quits Over Illegal Ethiopia Agreement

Hargeisa, Somalia, SONNA – Abdiqani Mohamud Aateeye, the Defense Minister of Somaliland, has tendered his resignation from President Muse Bihi’s administration. Aateeye made the announcement during an interview with the Hargeysa-based local television station Horyaal.

Aateeye cited his opposition to an unlawful agreement between Somaliland and Ethiopia, signed on January 1 in Addis Ababa, as the reason for his resignation. He expressed concerns that Ethiopia’s intentions extended beyond the sea and port, accusing them of encroaching on Somaliland’s territory. Aateeye criticized President Muse Bihi for failing to consult with his ministers before signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ethiopia, stating that they learned about it from the media. He emphasized the determination of the people of Somaliland to resist the perceived land grab, cautioning Ethiopia that their coastline was not up for grabs.

The agreement has faced strong opposition from the Somali government and the broader Somali community. The international community has pledged support to the government, acknowledging its right to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
