Somalia's Ambassador to the United States and Canada joined former ministers and prominent figures at a week of ceremonies, cultural exhibitions and community discussions in Alberta, one of many celebrations held across the world as Somalis everywhere marked the 66th anniversary of independence.

At a closing ceremony at Villa Somalia attended by the country's entire senior leadership, the President announced a finalised national plan to end Al-Shabaab, renewed the amnesty offer to its fighters, extended a hand of dialogue to Somaliland, ruled out any relations with Israel, and promised Somalis that after 58 years they will never again be led by a person they did not directly vote for.

Three years after the district returned to government hands, residents of Harardhere have begun collecting their voter cards, bringing Somalia's direct electoral process to a coastal community once known for insurgency and piracy and now preparing to cast ballots.
