Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali government has announced an ambitious plan to build a new airport in Mogadishu, aimed at enhancing the country’s aviation capabilities and addressing current congestion issues. Ahmed Macalin Hassan, the director of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, disclosed the plans during a national media weekly roundtable.

The proposed airport, to be located in Eelmaan, is expected to provide comprehensive services for both local and international flights. This development comes as a significant move to alleviate the existing challenges at the Aden Adde airport, which has been facing issues of congestion among other problems.

According to Director Hassan, a thorough five-year survey has been conducted to ensure the environmental and safety suitability of the new site for airline services. The construction of the airport is set to commence promptly, marking a major step forward in the modernization of Somalia’s infrastructure.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Somali government, under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, to streamline public services and foster a transformational change in the nation. The new airport is poised to become a pivotal gateway for Somalia, connecting it more efficiently with the rest of the world and supporting the country’s progress towards stability and economic growth.

The construction of the new airport is a reflection to Somalia’s resilience and commitment to rebuilding its public infrastructure, signalling a new era of development and opportunity for the Somali people.
