New York, SONNA — The Federal Republic of Somalia has marked a historic milestone at the United Nations by presiding over the UN Security Council for the first time in more than five decades, reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Somalia, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abukar Osman Baale, chaired the Security Council during its High-Level (HL) signature event focused on the rule of law. The occasion represents Somalia’s first presidency of the Council since 1972, underscoring the country’s renewed engagement and growing role within the multilateral system.

The high-level meeting brought together senior officials and diplomats to reflect on the importance of upholding international law, strengthening multilateralism, and ensuring accountability among nations in addressing global challenges.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the United Nations emphasized the broader significance of the moment and Somalia’s message to the international community.

Somalia presided over the Council for the first time since 1972 in its HL signature event on rule of law. For the betterment of all peoples & future generations, we must breathe new life into UN Charter—matching words with deeds and recommitting to the rule of law among nations.”

Somalia’s leadership of the session reflects its continued efforts to contribute constructively to international peace, security, and governance, while advocating for a rules-based international order anchored in the UN Charter. The milestone also signals Somalia’s re-emergence as an active and responsible member of the global community, committed to shared values and collective action.
