MOGADISHU – In a colorful farewell Iftar ceremony, the Chinese Embassy in Mogadishu honored the tenure of Ambassador Fei Shengchao, who has been instrumental in fostering the Sino-Somali relationship. The high-level event was graced by the Prime Minister of Somalia, esteemed members of the Parliament, the Deputy Speaker, the Somali Police Chief, and various dignitaries from foreign embassies and international organizations.

The ceremony commenced with a documentary that highlighted China’s significant humanitarian and developmental contributions to Somalia during Ambassador Fei’s 958-day service. The film underscored China’s pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic, its support to Banadir and Medina hospitals, the provision of scholarships to Somali students, military assistance to enhance the efficiency of the Somali Army, and the extensive humanitarian aid provided during Somalia’s challenging periods.

In his valedictory address, Ambassador Fei expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the attendees and lauded the Federal Government of Somalia for its unwavering friendship and cooperation. He paid tribute to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his dedication to peace and the enhancement of Somalia’s international relations, in line with his electoral promise of “Somalia at peace and at peace with the world.”

Ambassador Fei reflected on the current global conflicts, advocating for unity and prosperity. He emphasized the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, paralleling it with that of China. He proudly noted the growth of Sino-Somali relations, exemplified by the establishment of parliamentary friendship groups last year.
In his parting words, Ambassador Fei remarked, “Though my tenure in Somalia has concluded, my special attachment to its people endures. While some may perceive Somalia as a hardship post, I regard it as a post of friendship.”

The ceremony was concluded by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, who commended Ambassador Fei for his tireless efforts in improving the lives of Somalis, remarking that these endeavors have brought the two nations closer. He extended a profound sense of appreciation and respect for the outgoing ambassador, symbolizing the deep and enduring friendship between Somalia and China.
