Kuwait, SONNA –  Somalia and Mauritania have agreed to enhance cooperation in disaster prevention and risk reduction. The agreement was reached during a meeting between the Somali Disaster Management Authority (SoDMA) and the Mauritanian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development on the sidelines of the 6th Arab Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction in Kuwait.

The Somali delegation, led by SoDMA Chairman Mr. Mahmoud Moallin Abdulle, held productive discussions with the Mauritanian delegation, headed by Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development Mrs. Messouda Mint Baham. The meeting focused on sharing experiences, developing early warning systems, and strengthening disaster prevention mechanisms.

Chairman Abdulle emphasized Somalia’s readiness to contribute to the development of technical capabilities, particularly in supporting the establishment of an early warning center planned by the Mauritanian government. “The Somali Government is committed to collaborating with regional partners to enhance disaster risk reduction efforts and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters,” he stated.

The discussions highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters. Both delegations expressed a shared commitment to working closely together to build resilient communities and improve disaster preparedness.

The 6th Arab Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction has provided a platform for countries to exchange knowledge and strategies for managing disaster risks. Somalia’s active participation underscores its dedication to fostering partnerships and contributing to regional efforts in disaster prevention.

The Somali delegation reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with neighboring countries and international partners to ensure effective disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
