A delegation of women senators from Somalia is in Rwanda for a week-long visit to learn from the country’s achievements in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The delegation, led by Senator Shukri Adan Mohamed, the chairperson of the Women’s Committee of the Somali Senate, visited the Rwandan Senate, the Gender Monitoring Office, and the Isange One Stop Centre, which provides comprehensive services to survivors of gender-based violence.

The Somali senators expressed their admiration for Rwanda’s progress in ensuring women’s representation in decision-making positions, as well as its efforts to combat violence against women and girls.

They also discussed the challenges and opportunities for women’s participation in politics and peacebuilding in Somalia, where women make up 24% of the federal parliament.

The visit is part of a bilateral cooperation agreement between the two countries, which aims to strengthen their ties and share experiences in various sectors, including governance, security, and development.
