Dhusamareeb – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, received the credentials of the new EU Ambassador, Ms. Karin Johansson, in Dhusamareeb today.
The President, who is in Dhusamareeb to lead the fight against terrorism, welcomed the new Ambassador and expressed his appreciation for the EU’s support to Somalia, especially in the areas of eradicating the Khawarij and improving the security of the country.
The new EU Ambassador, Ms. Karin Johansson, congratulated the Somali government and people on the achievements made in the fight against the Khawarij, a term used to refer to extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab. She also shared with the President the efforts they will make to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between Somalia and the EU.
The two sides discussed various issues of mutual interest, including political, economic and social development, humanitarian assistance, regional stability and peacebuilding.
The President assured the Ambassador that the Federal Government of Somalia will work closely with them and facilitate the implementation of their diplomatic duties. He also invited the Ambassador to visit other parts of Somalia and witness the progress and challenges faced by the Somali people.
The EU is one of Somalia’s key partners and donors, providing humanitarian aid, development assistance, security sector reform and political dialogue. The EU has also been supporting the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which is mandated to protect civilians and support the Somali security forces in their fight against terrorism.
