Mogadishu (SONNA): The East African Community (EAC) hall, a focal point of the COP29 international conference, recently hosted a significant event where the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) presented an in-depth assessment study on the impact of the El Niño floods that devastated the country in the Fall of 2023.

The comprehensive report detailed the extent of the losses and damages caused by the flooding, providing a critical analysis of the affected areas and the necessary steps for recovery. The presentation was led by the Commissioner of the Disaster Management Authority, Mr. Mohamud Ma’alin Abdulle, who emphasized the urgent need to rebuild key economic infrastructures, such as the Bardhere bridge, which were severely damaged by the floods.

In his address, Mr. Abdulle highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to restore the country’s infrastructure and enhance resilience against future disasters. “Rebuilding our economic infrastructure is vital for the recovery and future stability of our nation,” he stated.

The event also featured notable speeches from distinguished guests, including Ambassador Jamal, the Director of the Climate Change Adaptation Center of the IGAD regional organization, and Mohamed Ma’alin Omar, the Advisor to the Minister of the Ministry of Planning. They echoed the call for international support and underlined the significance of regional cooperation in tackling climate change impacts.

A key part of the event was a discussion session involving all conference participants. The dialogue focused on identifying the most effective ways for Somalia to secure financial support for the reconstruction of the infrastructure devastated by the floods. The participants deliberated on various strategies to attract international aid and investment to facilitate the rebuilding efforts.

The presentation and subsequent discussions at the COP29 conference show the critical need for concerted action and support to address the aftermath of the El Niño floods. As Somalia continues to navigate the challenges posed by climate change, the efforts of SoDMA and the insights shared at this event highlight a path forward for recovery and resilience.
