Mogadishu, SONNA — Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre inaugurated the country’s largest Emergency and Trauma Center at Madiina Hospital in Mogadishu today. The state-of-the-art facility, with capacity to treat up to 200 patients simultaneously, is dedicated to providing critical care for victims of both natural and human-made disasters.
The center’s establishment marks a major milestone in Somalia’s healthcare response system and arrives exactly two years after the tragic Soobe II car bombings on October 29, 2022, which claimed over 100 lives and injured 300 others. The project was funded through a national initiative led by the National Emergency Committee, which includes federal ministries, the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), and local civil society organizations.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key government officials, including ministers, parliamentarians, the SoDMA chairman, civil society leaders, police representatives, and families of Soobe II victims, alongside many others who were instrumental in the center’s creation and Somalia’s ongoing disaster response efforts.
