Mogadishu, March 8, 2024 — In a heartfelt message, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Republic of Somalia extended warm congratulations to women across the globe, with a special emphasis on Somali women. Today, as the world observes International Women’s Day, the President highlighted the pivotal role played by women in various aspects of society.

Contributions to Development and Economy

President Mohamud lauded the significant contributions of Somali women to the development and economic progress of the nation. Their tireless efforts have been instrumental in shaping the future of Somalia, from grassroots initiatives to national policies.

Historical Resilience and Independence

The President acknowledged the historical resilience of Somali women during the struggle for independence. From the earliest days of the nation’s fight for sovereignty, women stood shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, demonstrating unwavering courage and determination.

Battling Extremism

In the present day, Somali women continue to play a crucial role in combating extremism. Their involvement in efforts to eliminate Khawarij groups—extremist factions that persist in certain regions—has been commendable. Despite the risks they face, many women have sacrificed their lives to safeguard their country and communities.

A Call for Continued Efforts

President Mohamud urged Somali women to persist in their endeavours for national development. Their active participation in education, healthcare, governance, and community-building remains essential. As the nation strives for progress and prosperity, the President expressed his heartfelt wishes for their success.

This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate the resilience, strength, and unwavering spirit of Somali women—a force that continues to shape the destiny of Somalia.
