Las Anod, SONNA — President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has formally declared North East State a full federal member state of the Federal Republic of Somalia, affirming its equal constitutional status and the Federal Government’s responsibility toward its security and development.
Speaking on the occasion, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud underscored that North East State now fully enjoys the same rights and responsibilities accorded to all other Federal Member States under Somalia’s federal system.
I hereby declare that North East State is a full federal member state of the Federal Republic of Somalia. It shall enjoy all the rights accorded to other federal member states. The Government is committed to the reconstruction and development of the North East regions, and the security, defense, and protection of these areas remain the responsibility of the Federal Government,”

The declaration marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s state-building process and reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive governance, national unity, and constitutional order.
The President further emphasized that the Federal Government will prioritize reconstruction, development, and service delivery in the North East regions, while ensuring security and stability through federal institutions.
The announcement reinforces Somalia’s federal framework and the government’s resolve to strengthen cooperation between the Federal Government and Federal Member States in pursuit of peace, stability, and sustainable development across the country.
