President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Calls for Palestinian Statehood at Riyadh Summit

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia emphasized the urgent need for a Palestinian state as the cornerstone of lasting peace in the Middle East In a powerful address at the Extraordinary Summit of the Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

President Mohamud highlighted the severe humanitarian crises faced by the people of Palestine and Lebanon, condemning the indiscriminate violence and destruction of infrastructure. He emphasized that the conflict in Gaza transcends politics and ideology, rooted deeply in human rights, dignity, and justice.

“The only viable solution for peace in the Middle East is the establishment of a Palestinian state with its 1967 borders and Jerusalem as its capital,” President Mohamud declared. He called upon the international community and leaders at the summit to take immediate action, proposing an urgent ceasefire and a return to the negotiating table.

The President’s speech comes at a critical time, as the Middle East continues to grapple with multiple conflicts. The region has been a hotspot of volatility since the mid-20th century, with wars and tensions involving various state and non-state actors. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as the involvement of Hezbollah in Lebanon, has led to widespread instability and suffering.

In his address, President Mohamud urged the international community to provide emergency aid to those affected by the conflict and to support efforts towards a two-state solution. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy and collective action to prevent further escalation and to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region.

The summit, attended by leaders from across the Arab world and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, serves as a platform for discussing regional issues and coordinating efforts to address the humanitarian and political challenges facing the Middle East.

President Mohamud’s call for Palestinian statehood resonates with the broader international community’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. The United Nations and other international organizations have long advocated for a two-state solution as the only path to a sustainable peace.

As the summit continues, the focus remains on finding practical solutions to the ongoing conflicts and ensuring that the rights and dignity of all people in the Middle East are respected and upheld.
