Mogadishu, (SONNA) – The Minister of Health and Human Services of the Federal Government of Somalia, Dr. Ali Haji Adam, delivered opening remarks at a virtual High-Level Meeting on Tobacco and Nicotine Products Taxes.
He emphasized the importance of addressing tobacco use and its impact on public health and highlighted the effectiveness of taxation in reducing its prevalence.
Dr. Adam shared that Somalia’s Ministry of Health has submitted a Tobacco Control Bill for approval by the Somali Council of Ministers this week. The bill represents a significant step forward in reducing tobacco use in Somalia.
He stressed the importance of cooperation and collaboration among all stakeholders in the fight against tobacco use and mentioned steps taken by his ministry to address it through public awareness campaigns and initiatives.
Dr. Adam expressed hope that the meeting would open a fruitful conversation to develop new strategies for reducing tobacco use and improving public health in the
region.
