Mogadishu, Somalia – The Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation of the Federal Democratic Republic of Somalia, MP Ali Yusuf Ali-Xoosh, welcomed the Special Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Mr. Charles Mballa. The two leaders engaged in comprehensive discussions focused on joint efforts to address the pressing issues of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Somalia.

The meeting showed the critical importance of collaboration between the Somali government and UNHCR in tackling the challenges faced by displaced populations. Minister Ali-Xoosh emphasized the need for coordinated strategies to provide humanitarian assistance, protection, and durable solutions for refugees and IDPs. He highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of displaced individuals and communities.

Mr. Charles Mballa, the Special Representative of UNHCR, expressed his appreciation for the ongoing partnership with the Somali government. He reiterated UNHCR’s dedication to supporting Somalia in addressing the complex displacement crisis. Mr. Mballa outlined the various initiatives and programs implemented by UNHCR to assist refugees and IDPs, including efforts to improve living conditions, provide access to essential services, and promote self-reliance and integration.

The discussions also focused on the implementation of the Saameynta program, a flagship initiative aimed at enhancing the living conditions of displaced persons in key urban areas such as Baidoa, Bossaso, and Beletweyne. The program, funded by the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland, seeks to provide more permanent housing solutions, livelihood opportunities, and support for displaced individuals to integrate into their new communities.

Minister Ali-Xoosh and Mr. Mballa agreed on the importance of strengthening the capacity of national institutions to manage displacement issues effectively. They discussed the need for increased funding and resources to support the government’s efforts in providing comprehensive assistance to displaced populations.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to continue working together to address the challenges faced by refugees and IDPs in Somalia. Both leaders expressed optimism about the potential for positive outcomes through sustained collaboration and mutual support.

This high-level engagement between the Somali government and UNHCR highlights the ongoing efforts to address the displacement crisis in Somalia and indicate the importance of international cooperation in achieving durable solutions for displaced populations.
