Interior Ministry Hails Benadir Elections as Historic Milestone for Somali Democracy

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation has issued a formal press statement celebrating the upcoming local council elections in the Benadir region as a transformative event for the nation. In a communique released today, the Ministry extended its congratulations to the Somali public, particularly the residents of Mogadishu, ahead of the polls scheduled for tomorrow, December 25, 2025.

The Ministry described the election as a historic step that fundamentally alters the governance and administrative framework of local authorities in the capital. It emphasized that this exercise implements a critical component of the country’s decentralization strategy, devolving political power to the district level and enhancing citizen participation in holding local administrations accountable.

“This election is a symbol of the new Mogadishu, a city that has endured difficult circumstances and stands as a testament to the resilience and patience of its community,” the statement read. It noted that for a long time, there had been a disconnect between the administration and the public, with limited opportunities for civic engagement. The vote on December 25 is positioned as a corrective measure to restore the bond and trust between the government and the people.

The elections will enable 16 districts within the capital to establish local councils based directly on the popular vote, reflecting the broader democratic changes sweeping the country. The Ministry acknowledged previous electoral successes in regions like Somaliland and Puntland but highlighted that the capital’s move to the ballot box sets a crucial precedent, paving the way for similar processes in the remaining Federal Member States.

Addressing potential challenges, the Federal Government reaffirmed its belief that any flaws or obstacles can be rectified through dialogue, consensus, and responsible review. However, the Ministry stated unequivocally that it will not accept any rejection or obstruction of measures that serve the public interest and national progress.

The statement concluded by urging the residents of the Benadir region to participate responsibly in the election and to cooperate in maintaining stability, peace, and order during this pivotal moment.
