Mogadishu, Somalia (SONNA) – The Independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission has elected Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan as its new chairman and Saaqada Abshir Garaad as the deputy chairman. This significant election marks a pivotal step towards ensuring a democratic and transparent electoral process in Somalia.
In his address, Chairman Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan pledged to deliver a democratic election for the people and the country of Somalia. The election ceremony, attended by the Minister of Federal Interior and Reconciliation along with other government officials, was praised for its transparency.
The National Electoral Commission is now set to commence its work to ensure that Somalia holds direct and transparent elections, allowing the people to choose their leaders. MP Mahdi Mohamed Guuleed, speaking to the national media, highlighted that the 18-member committee will elect the chairman and deputy chairman among themselves to initiate the process of one-person, one-vote elections expected to take place in the country.
“The election of the chairman of the electoral commission is being held today, so that their work of holding one-person, one-vote elections can begin,” stated MP Mahdi Mohamed Guuleed.
Recently, both houses of the Somali Federal Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the independent National Electoral and Boundaries Commission, reinforcing the commitment to a transparent and democratic electoral process.
