Urgent Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds in Hiiraan as SoDMA and Hirshabelle Plan Joint Response

Mogadishu – July 12, 2025 – A critical humanitarian situation is rapidly developing in Somalia’s Hiiraan region, triggered by escalating conflict involving the Khawaarij group. In response, a high-level meeting was convened today in Mogadishu between the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) and the Hirshabelle State administration to address the pressing needs of over 60,000 displaced individuals.
Mr. Mohamed Moalim Abdulle, Commissioner of the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), hosted a pivotal discussion with the Vice President of Hirshabelle State, Mr. Yusuf Ahmed Hagar Dabageed, at the agency's headquarters. The primary objective of the meeting was to strategize an immediate and coordinated humanitarian effort for those affected by the ongoing hostilities.
Vice President Dabageed provided a sobering account of the situation on the ground in Hiiraan. He highlighted that recent intense clashes have led to the displacement of more than 60,000 people, who are now enduring severe hardships. These challenges include:

- Acute Shelter Deficiencies: A significant number of families are without adequate housing, exposed to the elements.
- Widespread Food Insecurity: Access to sufficient food remains a major concern, with many facing hunger.
- Critical Water Scarcity: Clean and safe drinking water is severely limited, posing serious health risks.
