Who Is Mohamed Abdi Hussein Awkarey, the Former Bur-hakaba Official Reportedly Linked to Al-Shabaab?
Mogadishu(SONNA)-Mohamed Abdi Hussein Awkarey, a former administrative official in Bur-hakaba, Bay region, has reportedly emerged among Al-Shabaab leaders following the group’s recent takeover of the strategic town, according to local reports.
The development comes amid increased Al-Shabaab activity across parts of Southwest State, including Dinsoor, Qansaxdheere, Bardale, and Bur-hakaba, as Somali National Army forces continue operations against the group.
According to local reports, Awkarey previously served as governor of Bur-hakaba during the transitional government period. In August 2007, he was reportedly released on bail from Baidoa Central Prison alongside several individuals suspected of links to militant groups. He resigned from his position in 2008 and reportedly later joined the militants.
His name also appeared in reports concerning an incident in Bur-hakaba in 2013, when militants allegedly held local residents hostage amid clashes with Somali National Army forces.
Bur-hakaba holds strategic importance because of its location along routes connecting Mogadishu, Baidoa, and other parts of the country. The town lies approximately 60 kilometers from Baidoa, the interim capital of Southwest State.
The latest developments have raised concerns among residents, amid reports of arrests and harassment targeting clan elders and young people, as well as looting and robbery.
The Somali government continues efforts to counter Al-Shabaab and regain territory under the group’s control. The situation in Bur-hakaba remains fluid as military operations continue.
