Two Young Pastoralists Kill Senior Al-Shabaab Commander in Ruunirgood

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — Two young pastoralists killed one of the most dangerous Al-Shabaab commanders operating in the Middle Shabelle region on 17 August 2026 in Ruunirgood district.
The commander was identified as Hassan Alasow Rage, also known as Hassan Husuley, aged 50 and a native of Ruunirgood district.
Hassan Alasow Rage was among the Al-Shabaab commanders operating in Middle Shabelle and was responsible for the group’s transport operations in the region. He had also previously served as what the group refers to as the head of “Zakat” collection in Ruunirgood district and was a well-known commander in the district and surrounding areas.
The two young men killed the commander and subsequently seized his AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
The commander had inflicted significant hardship on residents of Ruunirgood and surrounding communities, including the seizure of property and livestock, imposing restrictions and disrupting movement between the district and surrounding areas. His actions had also forced many residents to flee their homes.
The Ministry of Defence commends the efforts of local communities in confronting Al-Shabaab militants, demonstrating the determination of the Somali people to stand united in the fight against terrorism.
