Speaker Abdulkadir Stresses Importance of Free and Independent Media

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Speaker of the House of the People, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, has stressed the importance of a free and independent media in strengthening communication between Parliament and the Somali public.

The Speaker said cooperation with privately owned media outlets should be based on mutual understanding, transparency and respect for press freedom.

He highlighted the need to improve public access to reliable information, safeguard media independence, counter misinformation and raise public awareness in the national interest.

Speaker Abdulkadir said independent journalism, rigorous scrutiny and constructive criticism strengthen accountability and contribute to Somalia’s progress.

He also urged media leaders to uphold professional standards and help counter disinformation and extremist propaganda that threaten national security and statehood.

The Speaker emphasized that cooperation between Parliament and the media must go hand in hand with protecting the media’s freedom to inform, question and hold public institutions accountable.
