Somalia’s Armed Forces Launch Major Operation Against Al-Shabaab Militants Near Basra

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Somali Armed Forces are conducting a major operation against Al-Shabaab militants on the outskirts of Basra, situated along the boundary between the Middle Shabelle and Lower Shabelle regions.

During the operation, SAF personnel neutralised a number of Al-Shabaab militants, including two leaders. The forces also recovered weapons carried by the militants.

The operation remains ongoing, with SAF pursuing fleeing militants to clear areas surrounding Basra and safeguard local communities. The official results will be communicated to the public once the operation has concluded.

The Ministry of Defence commends the courage, sacrifice and determination of the Somali Armed Forces in safeguarding the country. It reaffirms that operations to dismantle Al-Shabaab and liberate affected areas will continue until the threat posed by terrorist groups is removed and the Somali people can live in lasting peace and security.
