Somalia, UNEP Discuss Climate Change, Community Resilience

NAIROBI, (SONNA) — The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Kenya, H.E. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, led a delegation in discussions with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Somalia Disasters and Conflicts Branch team on climate change, peace and security.

The discussions focused on strengthening community resilience, sustainable management of water and land resources, and addressing tensions related to natural resources.

The delegation also discussed Somalia’s efforts to bring government institutions and humanitarian organisations together to prepare for possible El Niño-related flooding, including developing a shared plan to support vulnerable communities before heavy rains arrive.

The Somali Embassy expressed its readiness to deepen engagement with UNEP on practical solutions to address the drought-flood cycle and explore resource mobilisation strategies involving government, development partners, donors, the private sector and the Somali diaspora.

The discussions highlighted the importance of a whole-of-society approach to supporting sustainable, locally driven initiatives and building resilient communities.
