Somalia, UK Discuss Defence Cooperation and Counterterrorism Efforts

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi received the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Somalia, H.E. Charles King, at his office, with discussions focusing on Somalia’s security situation and ongoing operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

The two sides discussed strengthening UK support for Somali security institutions and expanding bilateral defence and security cooperation to help reduce the threat posed by terrorist groups.

Minister Fiqi thanked the United Kingdom for its continued support to Somalia, as both sides reaffirmed the importance of cooperation in counterterrorism, strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Armed Forces and promoting security and stability.

Representatives of 43 countries and 21 Somali government institutions attended the conference in Mogadishu, where the Defence Minister said hundreds of websites and accounts belonging to armed groups had been closed and the coalition’s Secretary-General told journalists they are partners in the making of security.
