Somalia Launches Framework to Establish National Council for Population and Development

Mogadishu (SONNA) – Somalia has taken a major step toward placing population dynamics at the center of national development planning following the launch of a framework to establish the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD).
Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, Mohamud Beenebeene, launched the framework, which is designed to ensure that population trends and the needs of communities inform national and local planning, investment, and the delivery of essential public services, including health, education, employment, and housing.
The NCPD will bring together government institutions, Federal Member States, development partners, civil society, academia, and the private sector around shared development priorities, stronger coordination, and practical policies and programmes focused on the needs of the Somali people.
Government leaders, United Nations agencies, development partners, and other stakeholders welcomed the initiative and pledged their support for its implementation.
Building on Somalia’s commitment under the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD25), the NCPD will promote evidence-based planning and contribute to building a more inclusive future for Somalia.
