Somalia Launches First National Mental Health Policy for 2026–2030

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Health and Social Welfare of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Dr. Ali Haji Aden, on Saturday launched the country’s first National Mental Health Policy for 2026–2030 during an event in Mogadishu marking World Mental Health Day.
The event brought together Acting Director General of the Ministry, Dr. Fartuun Sharif Mohamed; National Health Insurance Agency Manager, Dr. Abdirizak Yusuf Ahmed Jalaluddin; the Ministry’s Head of Mental Health, Dr. Seynab Ahmed Nur; and representatives of hospitals, universities and international organizations.
Discussions focused on raising public awareness, improving access to quality mental health services, and combating stigma and discrimination against people living with mental health conditions. Speakers called for compassionate care, appropriate support and respect for their rights and dignity.
The newly launched policy will guide the planning, coordination and development of mental health services over the next five years, strengthening Somalia’s national mental health care system.
Officials also emphasized the importance of cooperation among government institutions, healthcare facilities, universities, development partners and communities to ensure inclusive services and protect the rights and dignity of people living with mental health conditions.
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on 10 October.
