Somalia Civil Aviation Authority Highlights Progress and Receives New Search and Rescue Equipment

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Director General of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, Ahmed Moallin Hassan, presented a report during a meeting held by the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development with ministers and officials from the Ministries of Communications and Information, as part of the preparation of the DanQaran Government Performance Report for 2022–2026.

During the meeting, the Director General presented the progress achieved by the Somali Civil Aviation Authority over the past four years and its role in developing the country’s economy and aviation services.

Officials commended the systematic process led by the Ministry of Planning in preparing the report, stressing the importance of documenting the performance of government institutions using accurate and verified data. The Minister of Planning directed technical teams to accelerate the completion of the report so that it becomes an official document that effectively reflects the achievements and performance of the Federal Government of Somalia during 2022–2026.

Meanwhile, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority received modern equipment from WFP/UNHAS to strengthen Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.

The Somali Civil Aviation Authority recently hosted a high-level delegation led by the Head of the World Food Programme (WFP), which included the Head of the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) and representatives of international organizations operating in Somalia.

During the visit, Director General Ahmed Moallin Hassan briefed the delegation on the progress achieved by the Authority, WFP/UNHAS priorities and opportunities to further strengthen cooperation between the two sides.

The delegation also toured various sections of the Authority and commended the progress made in the management and provision of civil aviation services.

During the event, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority was presented with modern equipment to improve Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for aircraft accidents. The equipment coincides with the opening of a new center that will operate 24 hours a day.

The equipment will enhance emergency communications, the locating and searching of aircraft or people in emergency situations, and accelerate rescue response in line with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The donation is part of WFP/UNHAS’s continued support to the Somali Civil Aviation Authority to strengthen aviation safety and security in the country.

At the conclusion of the visit, WFP/UNHAS reaffirmed that it would continue supporting the development of Somali airports, strengthening staff capacity and improving the Authority’s regulatory systems.

Director General Ahmed Moallin Hassan thanked WFP/UNHAS for its support and cooperation with the Authority, noting that the Federal Government of Somalia continues to advance the modernization of airspace management and the improvement of aviation safety.

The two sides also signed documents for the handover of the equipment and a memorandum of understanding aimed at further strengthening future cooperation.
