Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur led talks on the election and emoluments of EALA Members and on preparations for the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, where Somalia will field a parliamentary sports team.

Nairobi (SONNA) - The Speaker of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, on Thursday chaired the extraordinary meeting of the Speakers of the Parliaments of the Partner States of the East African Community (EAC), held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between parliaments and accelerating regional integration.
In a wide-ranging address, the Speaker spoke on matters central to developing cooperation and coordination among the parliaments of the EAC Partner States.
He began by thanking the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya and the Kenyan Parliament for the warm welcome extended to the leaders and delegations attending the meeting, and for the high standard of the arrangements made to host it.
He also thanked the Clerks and Secretaries General of the parliaments for the commitment, efficiency and preparation they showed during the technical meeting held on 27 and 28 October 2026 ahead of the Speakers’ session.
The Speaker set out two main items for the meeting. The first was a review of progress in implementing the decision of the Summit of EAC Heads of State on the emoluments and election of Members of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), which is scheduled to take effect in December 2027.
The second was a report on preparations for the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, which will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 4 to 15 December 2026.
The Speaker said Somalia is fully prepared to take part in the Games, and that the Federal Parliament of Somalia will send a sports delegation to compete. He said the Games would strengthen relations, friendship, solidarity and integration among the parliaments and countries of the region.
He encouraged his fellow Speakers to work together to reach appropriate, effective and collective decisions that serve the common interest of the parliaments and of the East African Community as a whole.
In closing, the Speaker expressed confidence that consultation and cooperation among the Speakers of EAC parliaments would deliver practical results that strengthen parliamentary cooperation, improve coordination between institutions and advance the shared goals and objectives of the East African Community.
He affirmed that Somalia is committed to taking part in effective consultation and to strengthening cooperation among the parliaments of the region.
