SoDMA Leads Regional Preparedness Meeting on El Niño Risks in Beledweyne

Beledweyne, (SONNA) — The Commissioner of the National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), H.E. Mahamuud Moallim, has opened a regional meeting in Beledweyne, Hiiraan Region, focused on strengthening preparedness for the 2026 El Niño forecast and potential disaster risks.
The meeting, which will continue over the coming days, brings together religious scholars, elders, women, youth, civil society organisations, as well as local and international humanitarian partners.
Representatives from the Hiiraan Regional Administration, Beledweyne District Administration and Hirshabelle’s Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management are also expected to participate in the discussions.
The meeting provides a platform to share climate forecast information, assess anticipated risks and identify early actions to reduce the potential impact of disasters, with particular focus on flooding and heavy rainfall expected in the area.
Speaking at the meeting, Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim stressed the importance of timely preventive measures, including strengthening the cleaning of waterways, improving early warning systems, ensuring adequate emergency supplies and developing clear evacuation plans to protect lives and property.
He also called for closer cooperation and coordination among regional and district authorities, as well as local and international organisations, to strengthen rapid and effective preparedness and minimise the impact of anticipated risks.
