President Hassan Sheikh Opens New Academic Year, Launches ABUUR Initiative for University Students

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, today attended the official opening ceremony of the 2026/2027 academic year for the country’s higher education institutions at the headquarters of Somali National University.
The President underscored that Somalia’s development is closely linked to improving the quality of education, advancing knowledge and investing in the country’s youth. He highlighted the vital role of universities in preparing a skilled and knowledgeable generation capable of leading the country and contributing to its development.
During the ceremony, President Hassan Sheikh launched the ABUUR Initiative, aimed at promoting innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial skills among Somali students.
He also inaugurated new buildings for university faculties, the Arab Health Affairs Committee Centre, and the Emergency and Critical Care Centre.
The President further laid the foundation stones for the Somali National University guesthouse and a new Innovation and Research building, supporting efforts to strengthen higher education, medical training and research in Somalia.
