National Human Rights Commission Reviews Priorities and Strengthens Rights Protection Efforts

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held a meeting at its headquarters to review priority activities and strengthen the Commission’s efforts to protect and promote human rights in Somalia.

Chaired by the Commission’s Chairperson, Dr. Maryan Qaasim Ahmed, the meeting reviewed the overall human rights situation in the country and discussed measures to enhance monitoring, protection and promotion of human rights.

The discussions placed particular emphasis on access to justice, protection of vulnerable groups, follow-up on complaints and monitoring incidents related to human rights.

The Commission also reviewed completed activities, the progress of its work plans and upcoming priorities, including accelerating key programmes, finalizing internal procedures and regulations, and strengthening cooperation with government institutions, civil society organizations and international partners.

Dr. Maryan Qaasim Ahmed stressed the importance of the Commission fulfilling its national mandate collectively, independently and transparently.

The members agreed on the need for continuous monitoring of the human rights situation and timely responses to emerging issues requiring the Commission’s attention, while safeguarding its independence, impartiality and public confidence.
