NISA, International Partners Kill Senior Al-Shabaab Militant Leader in Jilib

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), supported by international partners, killed Bashir Ahmed Haji Nunow in a planned overnight operation on Thursday, 1 October 2026, in Jilib District.
Bashir was a former leader of the Al-Shabaab’s Amniyaat assassination unit, a position he held between 2016 and 2024. He also used the aliases Geescadde, Fanax, Gardhuub and Ali Dheere.
Bashir Nunow had long been among the senior leaders of the Al-Shabaab terrorists, playing a major role in planning and executing attacks targeting the Somali people. The assassinations he was involved in included the 14 October 2017 attack at the Soobe junction, the Ex-Control Afgooye attack, the Soobe 2 attack, and other attacks that took place at hotels and various locations along the Liido beach in Mogadishu.
This operation is part of ongoing steps by NISA, in cooperation with international partners, to pursue Al-Shabaab militant leaders involved in spilling the blood of the Somali people, and to dismantle the networks they use to plan, organize and carry out terrorist attacks.
The killing of Commander Bashir Ahmed Haji Nunow is a major blow to the leadership and assassination networks of the Al-Shabaab militants, and is part of efforts to avenge the Somali people killed by the Al-Shabaab militants in terrorist attacks and bombings. Citizens with security threat information or intelligence related to the Al-Shabaab and Daesh militants are urged to share it with NISA: 199 | 0770 747474 | 0620 545454.
