Defence Minister Urges Reforms to Strengthen National Security and Accountability

Mogadishu(SONNA)-The Minister of Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, participated today in a meeting of the Steering Committee for the Security, Justice, Governance, and Accountability Project (SJGAP) in Mogadishu.
In his address to the meeting, the Minister stated that the development of modern, professional, transparent, and accountable defence institutions is essential for ensuring national security, safeguarding the country’s sovereignty, and strengthening Somali statehood.
Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi highlighted the significance of the National Defence Bill—which has been approved by the Council of Ministers and is currently before the Federal Parliament of Somalia—noting that it will serve as the legal foundation for national defense and the enhancement of accountability.
The Minister emphasized that national security is not limited to military operations alone; rather, it requires robust institutions, transparent administration, effective leadership, and the responsible management of national security affairs. Finally, the Minister of Defence expressed his gratitude to the European Union and Adam Smith International for their support in developing Somalia’s security and justice institutions. He emphasized that defence reform must be Somali-led, rooted in national ownership, and focused on sustainable outcomes.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Internal Security, H.E Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail, members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, the European Union Ambassador, and other officials.
