Information Minister Highlights Parliamentary Leadership Election as Step Toward Stronger Institutions

Mogadishu, (SONNA) — The Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Abdifatah Khasim Mohamud has described the election of a new Speaker of the House of the People as an important milestone in strengthening Somalia’s legislative institutions.

The Minister made the remarks in an official statement ahead of the parliamentary election to replace former Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, who has assumed the governorship of Southwest State.

He stressed the responsibility of the leadership of the Federal Government and the Council of Ministers to safeguard political stability and refrain from attempts to create disorder linked to motions of no confidence.

The Minister also said Somalia is making steady progress toward implementing a direct electoral system based on the principle of “one person, one vote.” He cited the successful implementation of the process in Southwest State and said Galmudug State is preparing to elect the leadership of its regional parliament and governor in the next phase.

He added that efforts are underway to introduce the direct electoral system in Hirshabelle State, followed by the Northeast State, before preparations advance toward elections for members of the House of the People and the Upper House in line with established timelines.

Meanwhile, several members of the House of the People welcomed the launch of the election process to select a new Speaker, emphasizing the importance of national unity in supporting the stability of constitutional institutions and advancing Somalia’s democratic process.
